ADVANCED FEA ANALYSIS AND BESPOKE MACHINERY DESIGN

T

FEA is a numerical engineering method used to predict how a component or structure will behave under specified conditions, such as:

  • Structural loading → stresses, strains, deformation
  • Static analysis → behaviour under steady loads
  • Modal analysis → natural frequencies and mode shapes
  • Buckling analysis → stability and critical loads
  • Fatigue analysis → expected life under cyclic loading
  • Thermal analysis → temperature distribution and thermal stresses
  • Nonlinear analysis → plasticity, contact, large deformation, etc.
  • Dynamic analysis → response to time-varying loads

Our story

Vibration Analysis — FEA Summary

Vibration analysis in FEA is used to understand how a component or structure behaves when subjected to dynamic or oscillating loads. The main objective is to ensure that the structure does not experience excessive vibration, resonance, fatigue, or failure during operation.

1. Modal Analysis

The most common starting point is modal analysis. It determines:

  • Natural frequencies of the structure, usually in Hz
  • Mode shapes — how the structure deforms at each natural frequency
  • Areas of the structure that are most susceptible to vibration

For example, if a component has natural frequencies of 25 Hz, 48 Hz and 75 Hz, these are potential resonance points.

2. Resonance

Resonance occurs when an excitation frequency is close to a natural frequency.

This can cause vibration amplitudes to increase significantly.

Typical excitation sources include:

  • Rotating machinery
  • Motors and pumps
  • Gearboxes
  • Fans
  • Reciprocating equipment
  • Road/vehicle inputs
  • Pulsating pressure loads
